Travel Insurance 101

Oct 06, 2016

Hurricane season is in full force and many travelers are having to cancel their vacation plans. If you think hotels will refund due to bad weather, you may be in for a surprise. Depending on your hotels cancellation policy you can still be charged.

If you are cautious and purchased travel insurance, you also need to be aware that not everything is covered. Travel insurance policies will provide a list of covered reasons for trip cancellation as well as a list of exclusions. Be sure to read the fine print, exclusions such as pre-existing conditions, may mean your claim is denied.

In addition to knowing what is covered and what is not, make sure you understand the type of policy you are purchasing. Trip cancellation reimburses you for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses if you need to cancel your trip before you depart, while trip interruption covers you while you are on your trip. If you need to return home due to a covered reason, trip interruption insurance will reimburse you for the lost portion of your trip.
