News in the sustainability world: New York City’s most famed hotels are pledging to get greener. By doing so, these hotel owners have agreed to cut greenhouse gases from their buildings by 30 percent or more in the next decade. As New York mayor Bill de Blasio said, if Manhattan’s most iconic hotels can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, anyone can.
Distinguished Specialty has partnered with the Association of Green Property Owners and Managers (AGPOM) to help spread awareness of how green behaviors lower risk and increase profits. One of the ways in which AGPOM supports renewable energy is by dedicating 10 percent of membership fees to purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) on behalf of AGPOM members.
Purchasing these credits is a way to reduce the environmental footprint of your electricity consumption. Last year, AGPOM purchased 4,790 RECs (4,790,000 kWh)—the equivalent of powering nearly 600,000 square feet of office space for a year, or 496 average U.S. homes for one year! Members can also purchase additional credits at AGPOM’s discounted price which can then be used to apply for up to 6 LEED credits.
